The History of Richard Bland and Family

This LibGuide discusses the family history of Statesman Richard Bland, as well as Mr. Bland's history

Richard Bland I

Richard Bland was born in 1665 at Berkeley.  He was the middle child of Anne Bennett Bland and Theodorick Bland, who was originally from Westover.  When Anne passed away, Richard obtained Jordan's Point.  In addition, he had a home on Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg.  As an adult, Richard labored as a merchant and a planter.  Moreover, he worked alongside William Byrd II in shipping and mercantile.  A bit later in life, Richard became a part of the House of Burgesses, was a justice for Charles City County, was a clerk for Prince George County, was a vestryman at Bruton Parish Church, and he was a part of the Board of Visitors of William and Mary College.

Richard Bland was wed first to Mary Swann, and then he married Elizabeth Randolph.  When he was with Mary, Richard had seven offspring, but they all passed away at infancy.  With Elizabeth, Richard had five offspring who all saw adulthood.  However, Elizabeth may have passed away giving birth to their last son Theodorick.  Elizabeth Randolph's parents were William Randolph and Mary Isham Randolph.  Both parents were from Turkey Island.  As she grew older, Elizabeth became an aunt to John Marshall, Thomas Jefferson, and many infamous Randolph family members.
