The History of Richard Bland and Family

This LibGuide discusses the family history of Statesman Richard Bland, as well as Mr. Bland's history

John Bland (1572 to 1632)

John Bland was born in 1572 and was the brother of Peter Bland.  He was the youngest of Adam Bland, and he was called "The Grocer" by his descendant Charles L. Bland.  When Peter passed away, John decided to create his own will.  Within the legal document, John left his items with his Godchildren and did not give anything to Lawrence Lownes' descendants or Gregory Bland's descendants.  During his life, John became an international merchant in 1627, a receiver of the King's rents in Yorkshire in 1628, was a part of the Grocer's Company in 1628, was a Company Warden in 1629, and was a part of the Virginia Company of London.  He also was the Captain of the Saint Gregory's and was a part of Sir Edwin Sandy's group.  During the 1620s, John was a part of the Council of Virginia.  In the meanwhile, John possessed almost four hundred acres of land in Virginia from 1618 to 1624.  He also placed his finances into Martin's Hundred.  On September 30, 1606, John wed Susan DeBlere whose ancestors were Hugenots.  The couple had sixteen children together, but only twelve children became adults.  John passed away suddenly in 1632.
