The History of Richard Bland and Family

This LibGuide discusses the family history of Statesman Richard Bland, as well as Mr. Bland's history

Peter Bland

Peter Bland the Mad was born around 1557.  He was given the title "The Mad" by descendent Charles L. Bland since he became paranoid as he got older.  When his father, Adam, passed away, he obtained the title of Skinner, and he gave the title to his son-in-law in 1611.  By 1618, Peter became a Master Skinner.  In 1615, Peter decided to create a will.  Within the official document, Peter declared that he was receiving 240 pounds sterling, and he was in possession of 10,000 pounds in an estate.  This estate was to be given to his daughters and grandchildren once he had passed away.  Furthermore, the estate was to be controlled and managed by Peter's nephew-in-law Lawrence Lownes.  Peter also gave Lownes one hundred and fifty pounds and told him and John Bland to sell his lands and share the wealth gained from selling the lands with the grandchildren.  However, Lownes decided to burn the will and forced Peter to live with him and create a new will that would benefit Lownes.  Before he could get away with his crimes, the living members of the Bland family discovered Lownes' nefarious deeds and had him sent to jail.  Twelve years after making the will, Peter passed away.  He had outlived all of his offspring, and his wife passed away in 1614.
