The History of Richard Bland and Family

This LibGuide discusses the family history of Statesman Richard Bland, as well as Mr. Bland's history

Adam Bland

Adam Bland was born around 1528, and his father was Roger Bland.  He acquired an apprenticeship in the Skinner's Company of London in 1542.  By 1559, Adam gained a membership in the Skinner's Company, and, in 1560, he began to labor for Queen Elizabeth I as a Skinner.  He also was given the post of Sergeant Pelectier, which allowed him access to the Queen's household.  Moreover, the Queen felt bad for his cousin John, who was punished to death by Queen Mary for not switching to Catholicism and becoming a Catholic priest.  At some point in time, Adam was wed to Joan Atkyns, who was the offspring of the Esquire of London William Atkyns.  Together, Joan and Adam had four daughters and ten sons.  When Adam got older, his son Peter obtained his jobs and stayed in the positions until King James II.  Then, when Peter became ill, the positions were transferred to Peter's son-in-law Thomas Langhorne.  Adam Bland passed away in 1594.
