Podcast History

  • Dave Winer and Adam Curry were the first people to be recognized as the people who got podcasting to truly start in the year 2004.  1

    • Other people are declared to be the inventors of the podcast, but most people give the credit to Curry and Winer 

  • In February 2004, Ben Hammersley discussed a novice media form that he called the podcast in his composition in The Guardian 

  • In October 2004, a company known as Liberated Syndication appears and allows for podcasts to be viewed 

  • In January 2005, Ron Bloom and Adam Curry invent a podcast known as “Podshow” 

    • Constantly utilized the sentence “quit your day job,” even though most of the helpers of the podcast could not leave their positions 

  • In April 2005, Leo Laporte invents the podcast known as “This Week in Tech,” which goes on to obtain a People’s Choice Award 

  • In May 2005, Todd Cochrane rendered a podcasting book entitled Podcasting: Do-it-Yourself Guide 

  • In June 2005, Apple updates iTunes to include assists with podcasts 

  • In July 2005, President George W. Bush gives a speech via a podcast 

  • In October 2005, Yahoo publishes a section of their website that allows for people to search for and view podcasts 

    • By October 2007, this section ceased operations 

  • In December 2005, a podcast known as “Mommycast” gets sponsored by a company named Dixie 

    • Also in December 2005, the New Oxford American Dictionary makes the word podcast the word of the year 

  • A podcast known as “Mugglecast” obtains a People’s Choice Award in 2006 

  • In January 2006, Steve Jobs discusses how one can create a podcast in GarageBand 

  • A podcast directory website appears in July of 2006 called blubrry.com 

  • A podcast known as “Keith and the Girl” obtains a People’s Choice Award in 2007 

    • Also in 2007, Ricky Gervais’ podcast obtains more than 261,000 downloads in a month, thus causing Gervais to get a Guinness World Record 

  • In May 2007, Google purchases the company called FeedBurner for about $100 million 

    • FeedBurner allowed for people to render an RSS feed for iTunes 

  • A podcast known as “Manager Tools” obtains a People’s Choice Award in 2008 

    • Also in 2008, Podpress’ creator decided to cease production on the plugin for WordPress, and WordPress was forced to tweak remaining issues 

    • Also in 2008, Edison Research conducted a survey in the United States about podcasting and discovered that people with knowledge of the term podcast was around thirty seven percent and that almost twenty percent of people on the internet have listened to a podcast 

      • By 2009, thirty seven percent increased to forty three percent, and almost twenty percent increased to twenty five percent 

        • By May 2012, almost thirty percent of people in the United States had viewed a podcast 

  • A podcast created by ESPN called “Fantasy Focus Football” obtains a People’s Choice Award in 2009 

  • In September 2009, when Marc Maron saw his radio program cease, he decided to invent the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast 

    • In the Fall of 2025, Maron and his producer Brendan McDonald will conclude the podcast.  2

    • Maron talked with President Barack Obama on June 22, 2015.  1

  • A podcast known as “Tell Em Steve Dave” obtains a People’s Choice Award in 2010 

  • A podcast known as “4Player Podcast” obtains a People’s Choice Award in 2011 

  • In May2011, Adam Carolla’s podcast gets a Guiness World Record after obtaining almost sixty million views between March 2009 and March 2011 

  • “Fantasy Focus Football” by ESPN again obtains a People’s Choice Award in 2012 

  • In August 2012, Google gets rid of the Google Listen phone application, which at the time was the only Android phone app for podcasts 

  • In February 2013, a group called Personal Audio Patent Troll takes multiple podcasters to court after the group declares that they own a large patent on podcasting going back to 2009 

  • In June 2013, Apple obtains one billion subscriptions to podcasts 

  • In October 2013, the Electronic Frontier Foundation attempted to eliminate the Personal Audio Patent within the United States Trademark Office 

    • By August of 2017, the court supported the Electronic Frontier Foundation.  1

  • On 13 October 2017, Amazon Prime Video rendered the first made for television production, entitled Lore, that was grounded in a podcast originally crafted by Aaron Mahnke 

  • On 17 July 2018, the podcast “The Adventure Zone” from the podcast company called Maximum Fun invented a graphic novel that went along with the first season of the podcast 

  • At the beginning of February in 2019, Spotify purchased Anchor FM Inc., and Gimlet Media 

  • On 19 May 2020, Joe Rogan joined forces with Spotify for a many-year contract.  1
