Computer Literacy

This LibGuide discusses computer literacy and how one should improve one's level

Older People and Computer Literacy

  • Computer literacy can also better people older than sixty-five

    • If an older person learns how to utilize computer programs for communication, they can better talk with loved ones from anywhere in the world

      • This helps with the betterment of their lives because seniors wish to consistently stay in touch with their families

    • Older people can see more of what is out there in the world

      • If someone is home bound, museum websites tend to have a virtual tour, and seniors can learn and gain mental stimulation from these virtual tours or historical information in general provided by the museum’s website

        • Home bound seniors can also use their bank virtually rather than physically conducting transactions

Younger People and Computer Literacy

  • According to EducationWeek, children in the United States’ levels of computer literacy have decreased within a span of five years

    • While young people are utilizing the world wide web more often, the introduction and prevalence of artificial intelligence has blurred the lines of fake and true, and young people are not thoroughly examining and scrutinizing the information presented to them on the internet

    • In 2018, young people scored a 519-point average on a computer literacy test, but by 2023, the average score was 482

      • South Korea obtained an average score of 537 in 2023 and 536 in 2018

      • The head person of the NCES, Peggy G. Carr, was saddened by the scores in the United States and emphasized that young learners must heavily study topics within computer literacy just as much as they study reading, writing, and arithmetic

        • Teachers in the United States today, however, are forced to profess information that will be shown on the SOL tests, and this allows for professing digital and computer literacy and computational thinking to be mostly ignored
