Careers

Some classes may require you to take a look into future careers within your chosen academic path. You may also be considering your options here at Richard Bland College. Here are some places to find out more about careers and professional development in this field.

Overview

An excellent way to find the future outlook, occupational issues, and other career overviews in your desired position it to do research in this field. You can find a lot of information through professional organizationstrade organizations, and/or government occupation statistic sites. It is always important to be well-informed on your decision. Doing research on careers not only makes you aware of the workload in various positions, but also gives you insight on what you can do to be a competitive candidate in the job market (whether by joining organizations, conducting research, writing articles or papers, etc.).

Using the Occupational Handbook

  • The United States Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook is a beneficial site that provides a job summary, education information, salary statistics, and professional outlook for a multitude of careers.
    • To use the Occupational Handbook, you can browse by occupational groups or through a customized search, refining your search to include salary, level of education, experience, and projected growth rate.
    • Once choosing your desired occupation, you can receive detailed descriptions of the career.
    • A helpful Glossary is also available on the website.
  • It is always important to utilize many sources when developing an opinion. It is recommended to also use professional organizations and associations to be aware of the current issues surrounding the profession and to stay up-to-date in the latest trends and shifts in the career outlook.
